Can I Sell My Midjourney Images? Everything You Need to Know

Before I go into detailed explanations, let me answer the question right away for those who can't wait: can I sell my images from Midjourney?

My answer: Yes, you can!  I've been selling this kind of content since February 2023.

Now, let me walk you through everything step by step.

What is Midjourney?

Midjourney is a platform built on a diffusion-based neural network capable of generating images. As of now, Midjourney (MJ) can generate not just images, but videos too — but more on that later.

The real boom of AI image generation began with version 4, released in November 2022. That version became a turning point in the field of generative visuals.

Earlier versions of MJ and other tools like Stable Diffusion existed, but the quality was far from ideal. It was often hard to tell what the image was supposed to be.

You can still choose which model version to use by adding commands like --v 4 to your prompt.
Here’s how Midjourney v4 generates a woman based on a simple prompt: “A woman walking on the beach. Her hair is flowing. She is holding a hat in her hands, with the blue sea in the background”:

Now compare that to the output from the same prompt in version 7, the current model:

Two Key Requirements for Selling Midjourney Images

Starting with version 4, the image quality became good enough to sell. So the first requirement for selling AI-generated art is met: image quality. Next comes the important question: where can you make money with AI art?

Before that, you need to understand the second critical requirement: commercial usage rights.

Do You Own the Rights to Midjourney Images?

According to Midjourney’s Terms of Service, any user with a paid subscription owns the images and videos they generate. Even if the subscription expires, you keep ownership.

However, if you upscale someone else's image (for example, one found in the public gallery or Discord), you are not the copyright owner. You cannot use that image commercially without permission.

Another grey area: what if you use someone else’s image as part of your prompt? Technically, the final result is yours. But the original creator could claim you used their work without consent.

To stay safe, always use your own prompts and images. That way, you won't face copyright issues.

Midjourney Subscription = Commercial Rights

Ownership applies only with a paid subscription. Previously, users could generate about 10 images for free. But after someone used a free version to generate viral images of the Pope in a Balenciaga jacket, шт 2023 free access was removed.

Now, free generation is only available via mobile apps. There is no free test version in Discord or on the main site.

So, Can I Sell Midjourney Images?

This article does not cover how to generate images. My focus here is the legal and practical side of the question: can I sell Midjourney images?

And the answer is yes. Thousands of creators, myself included, do it regularly. There’s already enough info on how to generate prompts — in Midjourney’s documentation, on YouTube, and in blogs.

To answer this question fully, you also need to know where it's allowed to sell. I’ll now share a list of stock platforms that, based on my experience, accept AI-generated images.

10 Stock Platforms That Welcome AI Art from Midjourney

  • Adobe Stock
  • Dreamstime
  • Victeezy
  • PixtaStock
  • Depositphotos
  • Freepik
  • 123RF
  • Creative Market
  • Cavan Images
  • Fine Art America (not a classic stock site, but AI images do sell)

Platforms that don’t currently accept Midjourney content include:

  • Shutterstock

  • iStock

  • Pond5

  • Alamy

Most likely, these platforms will not change their stance until laws in the US and EU clarify the use of generative AI.

My Experience Selling Midjourney Images

I started in 2023. The first image I sold was a Valentine’s Day themed piece: a heart on a plate.
It took about two weeks to sell after uploading to Adobe Stock.

During that time, I was nervous: would they accept it? Would anyone buy it?

By March, I had already made several sales of AI-generated images. Throughout 2023, the growth in AI art sales was steady and consistent, as you can see in this chart:

While my portfolio also included photography at the time, I gradually stopped shooting once I began focusing on uploading AI-generated artwork.

But in 2024–2025, things changed. As tools like Midjourney became more accessible, competition grew. The initial boom turned into slower, more steady growth. Summer months are especially quiet due to seasonality.

Between 2023 and 2025, I created around 30,000 images. These included photography-style images, 3D illustrations, and flat vector-style works. To create variety, I studied vector styles and included them in my prompts.

For example, if I want to generate an image in MidJourney featuring flat-style illustrated leaves, I simply include the appropriate phrase in the prompt. For instance: Flat illustration of a puppy sitting on the grass, soft pastel colors, clean vector style. And the result is:

Why I Love Selling Midjourney Images

Honestly, I love it. Here's why:

  • It’s easy
  • It’s convenient
  • Seriously — it’s that simple

If you have a subscription, you’re a creator. Midjourney’s interface is intuitive enough for beginners to learn within a few days and start selling.

When I first started working with Midjourney, I was on the Basic plan, which allowed me to generate images — but, unfortunately, in limited quantity. However, there’s one trick: inside your Midjourney account, you can vote on images you like for about 15 minutes. The next day, you’ll most likely receive internal credits — more precisely, one additional hour for image generation.

That’s how I, along with many other beginner stock contributors, was able to produce several hundred images per month without having to invest much money upfront.

Later on, I switched to the Pro plan, which costs $30 per month. One of the key benefits of this plan is access to what’s called relax generation — or  relax mode.

This mode allows you to keep creating images even after you’ve used up all your fast credits (measured in hours). On the Basic plan, this feature isn’t available — once your credits are gone, image generation simply stops.

With an unlimited plan, you still have a credit limit for fast generations. After that, you can only use Relax Mode.

In Fast mode, generation takes around 30 seconds. In Relax, it takes 2–3 minutes.

Generating Video With Midjourney

Midjourney now supports video generation. This was added in June 2025.

AI-generated video still created using Midjourney’s new video feature introduced in June 2025

I’ve worked with generative content for over 2.5 years, including video. I’ve compared Midjourney to tools like SORA, Minimax, Gen-4 Runway, Kling, and others.

Midjourney stands out in terms of motion physics. In other tools, hands or objects can distort during movement. In Midjourney, such glitches are rare.

It feels like the AI understands real-world physics.

A Minor Issue and How to Avoid It

Midjourney videos sometimes show slight pixel flickering — barely visible but still there.

To avoid rejection on stock platforms, I don’t slow down Midjourney videos on Topaz video AI (like I used to do with other AI tools).

I use the Extended feature to stretch 5-second videos to 10–21 seconds and typically export them at 10 seconds, which meets the minimum stock length

As of now, I haven’t sold any videos yet (they’re too new), but several dozen have already been accepted.
My acceptance rate is about 70%, which is great for a new feature.

Final Thoughts

Yes, you can absolutely make money from Midjourney-generated art. Why?

  1. It’s simple
  2. The entry barrier is low
  3. Pro plans offer unlimited generation
  4. The $60/month plan supports unlimited video (I currently have this plan).

There are plenty of platforms that accept AI content. Uploading to multiple platforms multiplies your chance of success.

The only real hurdle is writing titles, descriptions, and keywords.

But I solved that with TagWithAI — it helps me generate all metadata instantly.
Now I just upload and wait for sales. You’re welcome to try the service yourself — your first 10 images, videos, or vector files can be described completely free of charge.
